I, Daniel Blake

I, Daniel Blake was written by Paul Laverty, who is a screenwriter and lawyer , the film was released in 2016 which is a historical year as Donald Trump was elected president of the United States and the Brexit Referendum begun. The release of this movie, whilst all of these historic events were taken place, would've been the right time as it is appropriate for the narrative. The drama film was directed by Ken Loach, who is an english director known for highlighting his socialist views in his work such as poverty, he has also directed other drama movies such as: Homelessness, Labour Rights and Poor Cow.

The film stars English actress and playwright Hayley Squires - who plays the protagonist, Katie, the destitute single mother of two who is struggling to take care of her two children. This character reflects the British single mums who are on benefits as her character taps into the different types of struggles they face daily such as: not eating so that her children can, relying on food banks and stealing to get basic needs such as sanitary pads and having to deal with her child being bullied for wearing damaged school shoes. The film also stars Dave Johns - who is an English stand up comedian, actor and writer. He has won two awards: British Independent Award for best actor and Empire Award for best male newcomer. Dave's breakthrough  role was playing Daniel in I, Daniel Blake. The director purposely wanted low skilled actors/actresses as the film was low budget and to also emphasise the realism of the film.

Furthermore, the films was funded by production companies such as:

  • VOO (participation)
  • BeTV (participation)
  • I, Daniel Blake was advertised on many social media platforms such as YouTube (trailers and interview)and they had premiered in Newcastle.
