Beyonce - Run The World (girls) & Dizzy Rascal - Dream music video analysis
In the opening of the music video, there's a wide shot of Beyonce riding a black horse in a desert. In the mise en scene, there are broken trees lying on the sand, broken satellites, a bonfire and litter. This could signify male destruction in the world and the effect of a woman on a horse observing the corruption could represent women being the saviour and hero. For instance, Beyonce is dressed in all white which connotes purity, innocence and virginity; this emphasises the theme of power as it is shown to be misused by men. In addition, the black horse connotes dominance and war as horses are used for wars. Also, the fact that a woman is on a horse converts the stereotype of femininity as horse riding is seen to be a masculine sport in the entertainment industry.
32 seconds into the music video, there is a still wide shot of a group of women of a variety of ethnicities dressed in the colour palette black and gold - These two colours conveys power, wealth and strength which fits Beyonce's ideology of women uniting together and in this image that gives off a goddess vibe/style. The prop of a red flag suggests unity as in the lyrics states " To build a nation" This emphasises the message of women coming together to fight the patriotic man. Moreover, there's a lion in the front frame of the shot that connotes power and strength.
Throughout the music video, we see Beyoncé performing with two black male African style dancers, there faces are cut off in the mid shot and Beyoncé is stood in the middle to show dominance. The men are dressed in all black with a riot shield standing directly opposite the women to emphasise the theme of men vs women. Meanwhile, the women dance this shows the fight women are making towards men.
In contrast to the Dizzy Rascal Dream music video, the main themes are white middle-class, cultural difference, success and failure. This is evident at the beginning of the video where a white old lady is sat at a piano dressed in a fancy light purple dress signifying her privileged background. The connotations of the colour purple are loyalty and wealth - this highlights the theme of white middle-class. She speaks in a middle-class language code that juxtaposes the way Dizzy Rascal speaks in the music video as he has working-class language codes. 58 seconds in the music video, two black puppet men steal a tv and the puppet police, who's a white man, appear in a police car and beat the puppet thieves up. This is a reflection of the urban artist's reality and experience.
